How to Find a Good Joiner
Finding a skilled, reliable joiner takes a bit of legwork, but a handful of checks can save you a lot of hassle later. Here's what to look for before you commit to a quote.
What to Check Before You Hire
- ID and insurance: A genuine joiner should be happy to show ID and confirm they carry public liability insurance
- Who does the actual work: Ask whether the person quoting will personally carry out the job, or check who will be on site
- References and past work: Ask for references from previous clients and, where possible, examples or photos of completed projects
- Multiple written quotes: Get at least two written quotations covering both materials and labour, so you can compare fairly
- A written contract: Agree the scope, price and any extras in writing before work starts, to avoid unexpected costs later
- Payment terms: Agree deposit terms upfront -- a fair arrangement rarely asks for more than 50% before work begins, with the balance due on satisfactory completion
Red Flags to Watch For
Be cautious of anyone unwilling to provide references, insurance details or a written quote, or who pressures you to pay a large deposit upfront. Always get a receipt for any payment, and don't rely on verbal-only agreements for price or timescales.
