Joiner tips for fitting a new front door

The front door of your home or business makes a huge impression, especially on first time callers and leaves a lasting impression.

The front door of your home or office also has an effect on the overall look of the building – which could be vitally important if you’re planning on selling.

Fitting a front door needn’t be as difficult as you might think, but does require careful and accurate measuring and joinery and carpentry work. Fiiting a new door can easily be achieved by anyone with reasonable DIY skill and experience.

Measure The Door Frame

Measure the height and width of the door frame and also check that the frame is square by measuring diagonally from corner to corner.

Purchase a door that is either the right size for your measurements or a little larger. For the best fit, the door should be 3mm smaller at the top and sides than the frame and 5mm at the bottom.

If the new door is too big, mark the face of the door with a soft pencil and cut to size, using a panel or circular saw. Make sure to remove the same amount of wood on each edge for a good finish.

Using a good, sharp, and correctly adjusted plane remove any excess wood until you get to your pencil marks. Always plane in the direction of the grain to avoid splitting. Plane from the edges towards the centre.

If yopu are working opn your own you might find that hanging the door can be the most awkward part of this job. Ideally you need someone to hold the door in place while correctly positioning and marking the hinge locations. Alternatively use some wedges to hold the door in place. If you watch an experienced Joiner you will often see them take of their shoes and use there toes to position the door whilst marking off. I wouldn’t recommend this method unkless you have had experience of hanging a great deal of doors.

The hinge recesses should already be there for you to use. If they need to be made larger then mark off using your new hionges and chisel out to the pencil marks. Make sure your chisel is nice and sharp otherwise it will look a mess.

Place the hinges onto the door with one screw and offer up to position to teh door frame and fasten with one screw. Make sure the door opens and shuts correctly before adding the remaining screws.

Finally, once you are happy with the door alignment you can then think about protecting your new door with paint or wood stain.

Many people confuse the terms Joiner and Carpenter. This post hopes to make clear the difference between the two trades.

Wikipedia gives the following definition:

A joiner differs from a carpenter in that he or she cuts and fits joints in wood that do not use nails, usually in a workshop environment since the formation of the various joints generally requires non-portable machinery. A carpenter would normally work on site. Cabinet makers who specialise in manufacturing furniture are regarded as producing fine joinery.

The “joinery” and “joiner” usage is obsolete in the USA, although the main carpenters’ trade union still calls itself the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.

A “joiner” would generally produce items such as interior and exterior doors, windows, stairs, tables, bookshelves, etc.

In the UK a wood occupations apprentice could choose to study Bench Joinery or Site Carpentry and Joinery. Bench Joinery being the preparation, setting out and manufacture of joinery components. Site Carpentry and Joinery focuses on the setting out and fabrication of timber elements of construction and installation of the joinery components. On site the carpentry can be roughly designated to the timber work installed before the plaster does his work and joinery can be seen as that timber work installed or fitted after.

I hope that has clarified the difference between joiners and carpenters. Please feel free to add your comments below.
